The Faculty of Public Health of Halu Oleo University (FKM UHO) is structurally established as a faculty based on the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 149 of 2014 concerning Organization and Work Procedures of Halu Oleo University. Before becoming a definitive faculty, FKM UHO has gone through phases of development starting from the Study Program to becoming a definitive Faculty. At first, the UHO Public Health Study Program was only a study program that was part of the UHO Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), which at that time was still called FMIPA UHO, and was under the Department of Biology.

The initial idea for the opening of the Public Health Study Program was based on a request letter from the Head of the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Health Office Number: 810/1740/IX/2002 which was addressed to the UHO Chancellor in May 2002, regarding the request for the opening of the Public Health Study Program. The request was followed up by the UHO Chancellor at that time with the issuance of the Rector’s Decree Number: 150/SK/J29/PP/2002 regarding the opening of the Public Health Sciences Internal Study Program.

In 2002, the implementation of the Public Health Study Program began by accepting Non-Regular students. To meet the needs of teaching staff at that time, a collaboration was carried out with the Public Health Faculty of Hasanuddin University and the Health Office of Southeast Sulawesi Province. At the same time, FMIPA as the organizer of the Internal Study Program for Public Health Sciences prepares a proposal document for the Public Health Study Program to the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia and requests for recommendations from the Human Resources Empowerment Agency (BPSDM) of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. Subsequently, the proposal went through a long process, and in 2004 the Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 3065/D/T/2004 was issued on August 9, 2004 concerning the Establishment of the Public Health Study Program. After obtaining definitive status in 2004, the Public Health Study Program began to accept morning regular students through local selection, because in 2004 the admission of new students through the SNMPTN pathway had been completed.

Efforts to improve the quality of the implementation of the Public Health Study Program were continuously carried out, so that in 2008 the Public Health Study Program managed to achieve an Accreditation rating of ‘B’ from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) based on the Decree of BAN-PT Number: 026/BAN-PT /Ak-XI/S1/X/2008. Furthermore, based on the Decree of the UHO Chancellor Number: 12a/H29/SK/PP/2011 on January 26, 2011, the Public Health Study Program obtained an upgrade to the status of the Department of Public Health, FMIPA. In the same year, due to the commitment of the Halu Oleo University leadership, through a Senate meeting, Halu Oleo University decided and determined the formation of the UHO FKM which was followed up by the Rector’s Decree Number: 410a/SK/UN29/PP/2011. In order to improve the quality of academic services and the development of the UHO FKM organization, various development strategies have been implemented through efforts to expand academic access, provide facilities and infrastructure, increase human resources, and prepare faculty documents in the form of academic texts to be proposed as a definitive faculty. Then, based on the hard work of the UHO leadership, based on the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 149 of 2014 concerning the Organization and Work Procedure of Halu Oleo University, FKM UHO became the definitive faculty.

Currently, the Department of Public Health and Study Program of Public Health, has four specializations, namely (1) Health Administration and Policy; (2) Environmental Health and Occupational Safety; (3) Epidemiology and; (4) Health Promotion. Finally, in the 2014 UHO FKM Public Health Study Program re-accreditation, the Public Health Study Program again obtained an ‘B’ Accreditation rating based on BAN-PT Decree Number: 159/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/VI/2014. The development of science in the field of public health continues to increase, so FKM UHO always demands itself to continue to take various steps for academic and organizational development to respond to various developments in the discipline of public health
